Check out this beautiful coin! Somebody put this away in a really good spot and forgot about it! No padded envelope and plenty of protection for your items. Here is a bunch of information I have found on this particular coin. It comes with a beautiful and highly specific attribution. This coin belongs to a fascinating subset of Roman provincial numismatics: it is a “Moneta Urbis” (MON VRB) issue, which means it was actually struck at the Rome mint explicitly for circulation in Antioch, Syria. The technical shorthand you shared provides exact details about your coin’s classification and its state. Breaking Down Your Coin’s Specifics. BL Tetradrachm: Billon Tetradrachm (a low-grade silver alloy). MON VRB: Short for Moneta Urbis (“Mint of the City”) stamped in the exergue (bottom) of the reverse side. RV Eagle with Wreath: The reverse (RV) design features the classic Syrian eagle with its wings spread, holding a laurel wreath in its beak. 5/5 and 4/5 (or 3/5): These numbers refer to an NGC Ancients grading scale. The first digit is Strike (5/5), meaning the coin was perfectly centered and struck with maximum structural detail. The second digit is Surface (4/5 or 3/5), indicating very minimal luster breakdown, minor scratches, or gentle environmental aging. Fine Style: A highly coveted designation given by NGC graders only when the celator (the ancient die engraver) executed an exceptionally artistic, masterfully detailed portrait. Because yours was struck in Rome rather than the provinces, the portraiture is typically sharper and much more refined. Depending on the exact placement of the eagle and minor field letters (like an A, B, or?), your coin maps directly to major classical catalogs. Prieur 304 or 305. McAlee 899 or 900. RPC VIII Online 29000. That letter combination stands for Choice About Uncirculated (Ch AU). Your coin’s official grade description is NGC Choice AU, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 4/5, Fine Style. What Your Grade Means. This specific grading profile elevates your coin far above standard circulated ancient pieces. Choice AU (Ch AU): This means the coin was barely used in the ancient world before it was lost or hoarded. It possesses almost all of its original details, with only the absolute slightest trace of wear on the highest design elements (like the tips of the eagle’s wings or the hair on the Emperor’s portrait). Strike 5/5: This is a perfect score for structural execution. The ancient die was perfectly aligned, deeply engraved, and struck onto the metal blank with maximum force, leaving no softness or missing design details. Surface 4/5: This indicates that the metal remains incredibly clean, smooth, and well-preserved, with almost no heavy pitting, harsh scratches, or deep environmental corrosion. Fine Style: This is the most prestigious designation on your holder. It is a special award given by NGC to recognize that the coin was struck from a true master-die engraved by a highly skilled Roman artisan. Because it is a Moneta Urbis issue struck right in Rome, the portrait of Philip I has hyper-realistic, lifelike facial detailing that provincial mints rarely achieved. Your coin is officially cataloged as Prieur 304 (or McAlee 899 / RPC VIII Online 29000), struck explicitly in AD 244. This was the first year of Philip I’s reign, issued to commemorate his rise to power and stabilize the economy of the Roman East. The Inscriptions on Your Exact Die Variant. Obverse (Front): AYTOK K M IOY?? I? I?? OY C? B (Greek text for Autokrator Kaisar Markos Ioulios Filippos Sebastos / Emperor Caesar Marcus Julius Philip Augustus). Reverse (Back):? HMAPX?? OYCIAC (Demarchikes Exousias / holder of Tribunician Power). Do you have any curiosity about the transport of these coins to Antioch from Rome?? The logistics behind the “Moneta Urbis” series are a fascinating chapter in Roman history. The coins made their journey through a combination of heavy military transport, naval fleets, and strictly guarded trade routes. Phase 1: Packing at the Rome Mint. Once the coins were struck by the master celators in Rome, they were packed for long-distance bulk transit. Containers: Coins were loaded into heavy leather bags or wooden chests (fisci). Sealing: The chests were sealed with hot wax or lead stamped with the official imperial seal to prevent tampering by the handlers. Phase 2: The Sea Route (The Main Highway). Land travel across Europe and Asia Minor was slow, expensive, and exposed to bandits. Therefore, the Roman government relied heavily on the Mediterranean Sea, which they called Mare Nostrum (“Our Sea”). The Route: The heavy chests were transported by wagon from the mint down to Rome’s primary deep-water port at Ostia (or Centumcellae). Phase 3: Armed Convoy to Antioch. The Orontes River Route: From Seleucia Pieria, the chests were transferred onto smaller river barges or loaded onto heavy military oxcarts. The Escort: They were escorted along the Orontes River valley directly into Antioch under the strict guard of the Legio IV Scythica or specialized imperial couriers (frumentarii), who acted as the secret service of the Roman Empire. Why went to all this trouble? You might wonder why Emperor Philip I didn’t just strike them in Antioch. Paying the Legions: Philip I had just negotiated a costly peace treaty with the Sasanian Persian Empire and needed to immediately pay the thousands of Roman soldiers stationed on the eastern frontier. The mint at Antioch wasn’t prepared for that volume yet. Propaganda: Philip I had just seized power after the death of Gordian III.
