C1840s Beautiful American Coin Silver Hand Chased Chalice Goblet Cup. Presented is an impressive American coin silver chalice or large goblet. The cup is made in a lovely classical form, beautifully hand chased and engraved with floral and foliate decoration around the sides and foot. The decoration is quite well done, with a nice degree of detail and texturing. One side of the cup has a scroll-enclosed cartouche, with the monogram PAH in elegant script. The cup is clean as can be, inside and out, ready for use or display. This piece is in great overall condition. The details of the decoration are nice and crisp. There is an old solder repair, professionally done, above the knop of the stem, which is much more noticeable in the photos than in real life. There are no other repairs, no splits, no dents, and no monogram removals. The chalice is stamped with the maker’s mark for William Forbes, a fine New York silver maker. This historic, beautiful pitcher is one of Stanwood’s earliest works. We know it was hand crafted by H. Stanwood between 1850 and 1865 before Shreeve became his partner. Coin silver was most commonly used for tableware until the end of the civil war when US currency was standardized. The small pitcher measures approximately 4 inches tall and 3 ½ inches in diameter (not including the handle and spout). It weighs 6.7 ounces. The pitcher is engraved with three initials and has been in the family for more than two hundred years. Family lore claims it’s one of the first examples of New England Repousse. Enamel was a standard material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry. The late Baroque or Rococo period prevailed in the 18th century. The period was known for its substantial use of asymmetrical designs, curves, gold, and witty, whimsical themes. Chasing is a metalworking technique that uses a nail-like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns onto a metal surface. This process creates a design that is sunk into the front of the surface using indentations, grooves, and channels. Chasing is thousands of years old and was a very difficult and time-consuming technique that is still used by metalsmiths today.
