The Cowpens Medal which holds the record of the Most Valuable U. Medal of all-time. And was just recovered after being mysteriously stolen over 100 years ago! Historic Revolutionary War-Era Battle Of The Cowpens Medal Struck As A Silver Coin. The Paris Mint is commemorating more than 250 years of French support for America’s Founding Fathers in the run-up to the country’s 250th birthday in 2026 by issuing a series of legal-tender coins based the historic medals it struck during Revolutionary times. This 2024 issue, the fifth release, commemorates the Daniel Morgan at Cowpens Comitia Americana medal. Designed by French artist Augustin Dupré and struck in Paris in 1789, it was one of 133 medals created as part of the Comitia Americana series, which recognized key moments of the Revolutionary War. Just SIX Battle of the Cowpens medals were ever struck, and they were awarded by Congress to heroes of the American Revolution. And now, France and The Paris Mint is striking the legendary medal once again, this time not only in pure silver, but for the first time ever as a legal-tender coin! Based On The Original Dies From 1789. It depicts American General Daniel Morgan on horseback at the Battle of the Cowpens fought on January 17, 1781 in Cowpens, South Carolina. The coin’s obverse shows a Native American woman placing a crown of laurels on Morgan’s head. Morgan and his troops decimated their British adversaries in the battle and marked a turning point in the Revolutionary War. In order to create this remarkable striking, the artisans at the Paris Mint descended into the cavernous vaults below the mint and retrieved the original 1789 dies, from which these special coins were exactly engraved to exhibit the iconic designs rising in High Relief. Plus, these coins have also been augmented with a unique antique finish that adds even more depth and dimension to its already high Relief design. Antique finishes like this are typically applied by hand which means that no two coins are exactly alike! Flawless Coins From Among The First Issued. The Mysterious Reappearance Of General Morgan’s Cowpens Medal. General Morgan was one of the six people who received one of the original medals. Upon his passing in 1802, the medal was passed down to his grandson, who stored it safely in a Pittsburgh bank vault-or at least he thought it was safe because in 1818 thieves made off with the priceless bauble and it was never seen again. The story doesn’t end there, however, because in 1839 Congress agreed to strike a replacement medal that was later presented to Morgan’s great-grandson. Fast forward to 1885 and American financier J. Morgan, who mistakenly believed he was a descent of the famous Revolutionary War general, acquired the medal for his own collection. It was later misplaced and believed to have been lost, stolen, or melted down. Act Fast; Just 2,000 Coins Struck For Worldwide Release. That number is an extremely low mintage when you consider how many people would like to add one of these magnificent pieces of numismatic history to their collection. New technical feat High Relief on both sides. Starting in 2020, Monnaie de Paris will retrace the history of American Independence through a collection of coins. The designs of the coins are directly inspired by historical products published by Monnaie de Paris: old medals from our archives. This sub-theme is part of the Great Dates of Humanity theme which began in 2019 with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the First Step on the Moon and the Dday. In 2020, Monnaie de Paris began the series “History of US Independency” with the arrival of La Fayette in Boston. This year, we have decided to represent the arrival of Washington in Boston. On the obverse, an undraped bust of George Washington facing right. Below the bust is the artist’s name, “Duvivier Paris F”. The engraving is taken from an old medal struck by Monnaie de Paris, which gives the coin authenticity. At the bottom of the coin is inscribed “COMITIA AMERICANA”, which in Latin means “The American Congress”. All around the coin, the inscription “GEORGIO WASHINGTON SVMPREMO DVCI EXERCITVVM ADSERTORI LIBERTATIS” is present, which can be translated as “The American Congress to George Washington, General-in-Chief of the armies, the defender of freedom”. On the reverse side, we can see Washington, on Dorchester Heights, leading its four officers on horseback towards the city of Boston. To the right of the coin are a fort, cannons and cannonballs lying on the ground. At the top of the coin, the inscription “HOSTIBUS PRIMO FUGATIS” can be translated as For the first time, the enemies are on the run. At the bottom, we can see the inscription “BOSTONIUM RECUPERATUM / XVII MARTI / MDCCLXXVI” which can be translated as “Boston taken over on March 171776″.
